Fly
Theatre Workshop's Alumni production. Presented in September 2002.

Sponsored in part by The Marshall Alumni Association and a UCIRA grant (University of California Institute for Research in the Arts), this show was an amazing opportunity to bring together 45 of Theatre Workshop's most ambitious, talented, and commited alumni (ages 15 - 24) and create one more two-act, dance theatre production. Several in the cast have moved on to professional performing careers since graduating from Marshall, others are studying dance and theater in college, and still others had not performed since Marshall. Regardless, the opportunities for all of these talented performers to continue working and developing skills in the arts and creating original, autobiographical theater has been limited since moving on from their Theatre Workshop days. This was not only a great chance to come together with good, old friends, it was also a way for these young performers to have another opportunity to create important and exciting dance and theater. We rehearsed over the summer months and presented our work in the same Marshal theater where we had originally met and performed years earlier. Several of the pieces in the show had been developed throughout the previous year in my Advanced Choreography classes at UCLA, a few were reworkings of earlier Theatre Workshop pieces from various shows, and others were brand new pieces developed in collaboration with the FLY cast. The show explored themes of self-discovery and identity, gender and community. In addition, the "play" within the show attempted to realistically portray the paths the cast members had taken following their high school years -- the pains and triumphs, the losses and the discoveries, the confusion and freedom of being an independant individual, an adult.
